Question:

Hi janet,
im making a frill out of netting to attach to a skirt but every time i try to sew it on my machine it jams up. I've  changed the needle but I don't know if  I'm using the correct size.

Can you give me any advice on how to correct this?

Thank you

Answer:

It sounds as if the fabric may be getting pulled down into the feed dogs but check your threading first!

If  could be that the thread has jumped out of the take up lever. This will sound very noisy and create tangle threads on the underside. Re- thread and check that the bobbin hasn't come out of its tension spring also. Sew on a scrap of calico to test sew before going back to the net.

Place a piece of tissue over the feed dogs when you start sewing. This will prevent tangles and tears away easily afterward.

I presume that you are gathering the net. There are two methods.

1. Using a large stitch sew two parallel rows through the netting. The netting can be stacked into layers and sewn at the same time. I usually drop one row either side of the seam line so that the stitches don't get caught up when the gathers are drawn up.

2.Sew an open zigzag over button twist or similar strong thread, drawing it up as you sew.

Hope this helps
